1st Place Winner – SAHIM Hackathon, by King Khalid Foundation

More Details

I participated in SAHIM Hackathon, a contest for social entrepreneurs with innovative ideas for social change. My team and I came up with a sustainable solution to increase the engagement of the elderly in the community. We were honored to receive the first place award from Princess Nouf bint Mohammed Al Saud.

We have developed a solution that leverages the untapped potential of the elderly population to enhance their social engagement and create value for the tourism industry. Our solution consists of three key elements:

    1. A customized portfolio of tourism experiences led by elderly guides who have unique expertise and insights on local culture, history, and nature. Examples include Pearl Hunting in Jeddah and Coffee Farming in Jazan.
    2. A targeted marketing strategy that attracts tourists who are interested in authentic and immersive experiences that go beyond the conventional attractions.
    3. A digital platform that facilitates the matching, booking, and payment of the tourism experiences, as well as providing feedback and ratings for both guides and tourists.

Our solution not only empowers the elderly to share their knowledge and skills with others, but also generates a sustainable income stream for them. Moreover, our solution contributes to the diversification and growth of the tourism sector in the Kingdom, which is undergoing a major transformation.

We have presented this solution in 2019, and it may have been already implemented by one of the entrepreneurial ventures in the market.

STYLMe Project

More Details

As part of my university journey, I completed a course project that required me to design and market a sustainable and profitable business idea. I received full marks and a bonus for my project, which impressed the course instructor, Dr. Daheri, who praised me for delivering a master’s degree students level work.

My project was STYLMe, an app-based solution that addresses the challenge of choosing and matching clothes for different occasions and preferences. This helps users find the perfect outfits for any occasion, while saving them time.

The app collects detailed data from the users about their measurements and style preferences when they sign up.

The app has two main offerings: a basic one and a premium one.

  • Basic offering: provides suggestions for matching outfits from various clothing stores. This offering generates revenue by taking a commission or a fee from each purchase made through the app.
  • Premium offering: a subscription service that sends users a box of tailored outfits every season, based on their preferences and measurements. This offering targets busy people who want to look fashionable without spending time on shopping and comparing.

I diversified the products to create different customer experiences and value propositions. I also developed the customer journey map, the marketing strategy, the pricing model, and the market entry plan for my project.

Although this was a theoretical project, I enjoyed working on it and applying the concepts of consumer behavior.

Sports for All Competition

More Details

Me and some of my colleagues participated in a competition organized by the “Sports for All” initiative, in cooperation with the “General Sports Authority“. The competition was sponsored by Prince Khalid bin Al-Waleed bin Talal, and its aim was to increase the Saudi population’s average time spent on physical activity.

We proposed an innovative solution that leveraged existing neighborhood parks to create interactive sports tracks. Our solution met three criteria:

  • Good customer experience: It provided a fun and engaging experience for park visitors.
  • Low implementation costs: It used simple designs for the tracks, which made them relatively inexpensive to build and maintain.
  • Diverse audience segments: The sports we chose are suitable for a diverse range of audience segments, including children, and adults.

However, our solution had one limitation: It required someone to be present at all times to run the tracks. This made it difficult to scale the solution to a large number of parks. As a result, we did not win the competition, but we have been told that we were a strong competitor.

The final solution adopted by the Sports for All initiative was similar to ours, but with a different location. They decided to use schools in neighborhoods as sports centers, instead of parks. This solution maintained the three criteria of our original proposal, while also ensuring scalability and sustainability. The schools had PE (Physical Education) instructors who could oversee the people using the tracks, and they were already open during the day, which made them accessible to a wider range of people.
